Free Food: A Powerful Approach to Viral Marketing

If you were thinking you never get any tangible benefit from reading my blog, think again.

Here is a link to free food.

KFC is promoting their new Kentucky Grilled Chicken by giving it away, via a downloadable coupon. You’ve got to print the coupon before midnight Central Time tonight, May 6. It’s good through the 19th, although not on Mother’s Day (a shame, as I was planning to fly to St. Louis and take Mom out for some tasty grilled chicken.

Anectodal evidence that this is spreading faster than swine flu: Dan O’Day posted it on his Facebook page. Ten minutes later, I’d posted it on my page (I’m at home sick today — don’t judge), and now it’s going on my blog, which will automatically go out on Twitter

I’d love to find out where it goes from here. If you post it anywhere, leave a comment and let me know where you posted it.

Auto Advertising Case Study

How many different ways can you say, “Big Car Sale This Weekend”?

I’ve been working with Joe Khorasani, the President of Premier Auto Group, since 2001. I did the math recently, and realized I’ve probably written more than 500 auto commercials in eight years.

Joe’s got a great sense of humor, and he’s allowed me to create a character using tightly-written copy, along with Matt Jones’ creative genius in the production studio.

There are two requirements for each spot: it must keep the listener engaged, and it MUST deliver a sales message.

Become a Phil Bernstein Facebook Fan

Really, who wouldn’t want to?

I’ve always struggled with the concept of using Facebook as a business tool — it’s always seemed awkward to place my blog posts and testimonial videos next to pictures of my family vacation.

So I’ve established a Facebook Fan Page, titled Phil Bernstein, Portland’s Advertising Expert. It will be all business, all the time. Blog posts, links to articles about sales and marketing, videos, and the occasional baldfaced sales pitch.

My regular profile will have the pictures of me partying with Lindsay Lohan and dancing in The Chippendales.

The Phil Bernstein Facebook Fan page is a work in progress. You can check it out, and become a fan, here.

Domino’s Meets YouTube, and The Result Isn’t Pretty

It used to be that the damage a couple of stupid restaurant employees could do was limited by geography: only folks in store’s local area would ever find out.

The rise of YouTube and its bretheren means that any idiot with a camcorder and an internet connection can now broadcast to the entire world — and undo the positive results of years of good marketing.

This week’s example: Domino’s Pizza. Recently two North Carolina Domino’s employees filmed themselves doing something very bad to a pizza.

In videos posted on YouTube and elsewhere this week, a Domino’s employee in Conover, N.C., prepared sandwiches for delivery while putting cheese up his nose, nasal mucus on the sandwiches, and violating other health-code standards while a fellow employee provided narration.

The two were charged with delivering prohibited foods.

By Wednesday afternoon, the video had been viewed more than a million times on YouTube. References to it were in five of the 12 results on the first page of Google search for “Dominos,” and discussions about Domino’s had spread throughout Twitter.

The damage to the Domino’s brand was swift, and significant.

The perception of its quality among consumers went from positive to negative since Monday, according to the research firm YouGov, which holds online surveys of about 1,000 consumers every day regarding hundreds of brands.

If you thought that you didn’t have to talk to your staff about how their social media activities can affect your company’s reputation — around the block and around the world — read the full story, gather your employees, and discuss.
